Interesting Strangers

So every time I work at Joann’s I try to remember one thing, one customer that strikes me as interesting.

Today, I was ringing up a lady who bought all of this stuff for quilting. Like over a hundred dollars worth of notions and rulers and maybe some fabric, right? So I confessed I was interested in trying it out and she said “Don’t do it.”

I said, “Do you really need all of this stuff?”
She says, “It’s half price. And no you don’t,” pauses. “Except when you enter contests… then you become a perfectionist.”

“Wow. That’s serious,” I say. “But do you ever get home and look in your one bag and say, “What did spend a hundred dollars on?”
She deadpans, “You get used to it.”

“Maybe I should just stick to knitting.”
Scoops up her one bag, “Yes! You should, it’s wonderful, you have your yarn.”

“Have a nice day.”
“You too honey.”

Spring Is In The Air

So I managed to go an entire month without blogging anything.

I am still alive.

I have been working 2 jobs and commuting without knitting so I haven’t accomplished much in the way of projects.

I owe someone an earflap hat and I just can’t bring myself to do it! It’s probs totally warm now so maybe next year capty…

In the meantime, let’s just watch March Madness and re-runs of Buffy on Logo. It’s a good thing I didn’t fill out a bracket this year b/c I totally would’ve picked Georgetown who already lost. The women’s tournament starts today. Unfortunately, I have to work all damn day long. I’ll have to catch up tonight.

I’m kinda sad that it’s getting so warm here. I’m still wearing some of my wool hats in the morning and while I’m at work b/c it’s so cold but I’m going to have to buy some spring colored yarn. Debbie Stoller’s bamboo yarn is great for that.

See ya! Enjoy your Vernal Equinox!

Hey It’s January!

I’m tired of looking at that post from Thanksgiving!

My job blocks all the fun sites: gmail, autostraddle, all blogs, we get 1/2 hour window for some shopping but that’s all!

So it’s Sunday and it’s Eli’s 5th birthday today. I have to work at Joann’s all day but I’m taking a brief moment to put up a new post.

Shouting out to all the knitters, crocheters, and wool lover’s abound! Hi there, what are you working on?

I bought some of Debbie Stoller’s new yarn. She’s the Stitch ‘n Bitch guru, extraordinare! Love her. I need to make something for L. Her birthday is coming up on the 8th.

I also owe some people some earflaps but I’ve been sidetracked. They are coming sooner or later. See why I didn’t take your money?

Hope you are all well…

Thanksgiving Week

So Thanksgiving is coming this Thursday.
Here’s what I’ve been up to:

I got a temp job that starts next week. It’s nothing spectacular, not my dream job or anything but it will pay my rent and I will still have to work at my part time job to make ends meet. Whatever, at least we won’t have to move or sell blood or get rid of the pets. The only bad thing is that I won’t be able to go to Tennessee with my family for two weeks in December. L’s pretty upset about that but it just can’t happen, plus I will be spending Christmas alone. Well I will get to go to my mother’s house for dinner but she’s having all kinds of family from her boyfriend’s side there. I will bring my knitting and maybe a flask of something. My mom will probs make me help her cook, which is fine too. I will just miss the kids and L very badly.

OMG our eldest son asked us if there was a Santa Claus. He said the kids in school said only babies believed in Santa. Neither of us could look at him in the face.

So my part time job is at Joann’s Fabric and Crafts. I just wish it would pay more money, then I wouldn’t feel so guilty for having fun working there! I’m around crafting supplies all day! I get to virtual shop (only because I have no money to actually shop) and, I get to deal with the public which is sadly fascinating. Okay for instance, just the other day, I had a lady and her sister go through my checkout line. The first lady had no arms. She was totally normal about it. She paid for some chocolates or something with her debit card and damn if she didn’t swipe her card with her toes and everything! Then, omg, her sister proceeded to unload a cart full of Christmas decorations. Literally. $400.00 + worth of stuff. And she saved like $350.00 b/c our stuff is on ridiculous sale now.

And the people I work with are super nice. Quirky. Creative. Old, young, middle aged. It’s just so much fun and diverse from the same old office crew. **Sigh**

And I’m scheduled to work 12 hours on Black Friday. 9 to 9pm. BUT, from 6 to 9 I’m teaching a knitting class! Isn’t that cool? It’s on a knitting loom so it’s not actually knitting but it’s teaching someone how to make something with yarn. How fun and awesome is that? They are also teaching me how to run birthday parties. I helped out on a girl’s birthday party for 6-7 year olds. So much fun. They decorated picture frames and cupcakes.

It’s teaching me how to be nicer to people. And they want to give me some kind of night manager position so I won’t quit right away and I’ll get more money to stay. I kinda like not having any responsibility. (Although I got yelled at today for listening to someone else tell a story about fabric. It wasn’t my fault at all but the store manager saw us and what’s worse is the Stockroom manager was the one telling us the story. She’s even yelled at people for standing around talking. I think my manager is just stressed because of this week though.)

Anyway, I will have more stories from the trenches after Black Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving for those who celebrate and read me.

Halloween’s Coming

Thank you for your kind e-mails and replies. If you came here looking at my shop but didn’t buy anything, send me an e-mail anyway! If there’s something else you would like to see for sale or want me to make, send me a e-mail and tell me. I am open for discussion on anything you want to talk about.

So yesterday, L made Eli’s Halloween costume and it looks awesome. She did a whole Project Runway type thing where she cut the pattern Tuesday night and sewed it all day yesterday. I mean literally, all day up until the Fall Festival at Slade’s school. She even got really mad and bitchy at me because she was so stressed about the deadline. (Just like on tv!) Well we went and everyone recognized him as Max and said how cool the costume looked. I am so proud of her for making it. I wish I had one too!

This morning she gives me my Dominitrix knitting book and says, how fast can you make this snow devil hat? I looked at it and will attempt to make it in time for Halloween. The only bad thing is that I have to work from 11-7 Friday and Saturday. (I got a part-time minimum wage type job until I can get a higher paying tech job like I used to have **sigh**)

Anyway, have a great Hallow’s Eve and Halloween! I’m sure L will post some twitpics of Eli’s costume on Saturday.

Knitslo’s Shop

Knitslo’s Shop

Here’s a little story for you:
One day, about a year ago, I decided to start this blog just for my knitting. About 3 years now and hats are easy and fun to make. Each hat has a little story, so if you decide to purchase one, I will probably put a little note with it about the hat’s history.

Don’t worry, I have hand washed all of these hats in Woolite, so when you receive them, they will be gently used but very clean. You should always hand wash them in cold water and lay them flat to dry.

The shipping and handling is not included in the price of the hat and the cost is $7.00 within the US and $10.00 Everywhere Else. If you purchase more than one item, there is a small additional cost of $1.00 (US) and $2.00(Everywhere Else). In case you think that the shipping is expensive, here’s a little note: it also includes Handling. This means, I will probably wrap it up special and include some little card or note with it. Also, I have had experience with Shipping/Handling items at another online shop (*maybe you remember this) and the one thing I learned was that you never want to undercharge for shipping. I don’t want shipping/handling to come from my pocket-thanks.

I do plan on upgrading my store. I need to make a sale or get some donations before I can do that. As soon as that happens, I will take the store down for maintenance and spruce it up. I can’t oversell these items as they are one of a kind. *Done! Thank you for buying a hat Sarah!

Also about these items: go to my Flickr page to see all the pics of the hats in the Knitslo Shop Sets. Knitslo’s Flickr (Most of the hats have multiple pics now, they are still on Flickr though!)

If an item sells out, don’t worry. I will make more hats eventually. If you want to talk about a custom order, just email me at 1knitslo@gmail.com. The cost will depend on the hat and I will probably add 25% to the price since I have to make it.

If you don’t like my hats or think that I should add different items to my shop, I encourage you to make a donation below to my yarn fund so that I can make more/different things to sell.

,

Thanks for stopping by and come back soon! (And don’t be shy about commenting!)

Mittens Done

Yarn: Inca Alpaca Yarn – Less than one skein.

Pattern: School Color Mittens by Vicki Howell from Not Another Teen Knitting Book.

Needles: #5 DPNs. (Crystal Palace 6″ Bamboo)

I made some pattern adjustments (obvs. only used one color) but since these are my first Mittens, it took me a while to get the best outcome from the pattern. Then duplicating it again for the second mitten went better.

First Mittens

First Mittens

-CO 40 sts. (10-10-10-10). Join. Work K2P2 rib for 2 3/4 inches (20 rounds)
-Change to Stockinette St. Inc 1 stitch at end of next round (41sts)

Shape Thumb Gusset:
-K20, PM, M1L, K1, M1R, PM, K to end (43sts)
-Knit 1 rnd
-*Knit to marker, slip marker, M1L, knit to next marker, M1R, slip marker, knit to end (45sts)
-Knit 2 rounds even
-Continue from *, inc in this manner (2 sts every 3 rounds) 5 times – 15 gusset sts between markers
-On next rnd, remove marker and place gusset sts on holder. Make 1 st over gap left by gusset, knit to end of rnd (41sts)
-Work even until st st part of mitten measures 5 3/4 inches. [Placed marker to denote round count vertically - don't remove until finished in case you have to frog!] (23 rounds.) On next rnd, dec 1 st (40sts)
-*K8, K2Tog*, repeat around. [Placed another marker to denote round count vertically in case I messed up decreases and had to frog-- which I did several times.]
-Knit 1 rnd even
-Repeat these 2 rnds (dec 1 st every round) until 24 sts remain (6sts on each needle)
-Dec 1 rnd every rnd until 8 sts remain (2 sts on each needle)
-Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight, fasten to inside.

Thumb:
[This is where I derailed from the pattern- first I worked in Purl where the pattern says to knit. I purled counter clockwise from the gusset so I could keep the stockinette stitch going around the thumb.]

-Place thumb sts on 3 dpns. Pickup 3 sts over gap and join. (19 sts) [The pattern says to pickup 1 but it left this huge hole in the gusset. I picked up 1 double st on the first needle and 2 double sts on the 3rd needle and that seemed to close the hole better. You just have to dec until you end up with 16sts total then proceed working the thumb.]
-Work in the round for 1 1/2 inches (9 rounds) from the pickup round. [I put a marker at the end (of 3rd needle) in case I had to frog back.] Where I had to decrease I used P2Tog – So I ended up with 16 sts total. (On the first round I started with P2Tog for the first 2 sts on needle 1 and P2Tog twice with the last 4 sts on needle 3. – On the next round I just had to P2Tog on the last 2 sts on needle 3.)
-P2Tog, P3, P2Tog, P3, P2Tog, P4 (13 sts)
-Purl 1 round even.
-Continue to dec 3 sts even across every other rnd, 2 more times until 7 sts remain.
-Work 1 more dec row (4sts)
-Cut yarn, thread tail through remaining sts, pull tight, fasten yarn to inside.
-Weave in all ends.

Listened to So Yesterday and it was very charming! Cool Hunters vs. Jammers.

Visited Lola Cafe, Smeeks, Haus.

I Should Wear A Sign: Talk to me about what I’m knitting…

Wait, I don’t need a sign. I just need to stand at the train stop or on the train knitting something and someone will come up and talk to me.

I was downtown at the train stop this morning when it happened. I should always keep a copy of my LYS’s class schedule on me so I can pass it out.

I finished one fingerless mitten yesterday and I’ve cast on the other one today.

http://www.straw.com/cpy/patterns/KidMerino-fingerless_gloves.html

I just knitted it one color since I’m testing the pattern. I ended up knitting 14 rounds after the thumb gusset and found that the thumb was a bit short according to the pattern.

I need help picking up the gusset stitches but I will see if I can do a better job with this one. If not I will go get some help. There are no videos online to show me how to do this! Very frustrating.

L. wants some now. Of course she does! Not so itchy though. Maybe I’ll go to TY&F and see if they have any of that Malabrigo Sock left in Eggplant. I can knit her a matching pair to go with her scarf. Oh and I should totally finish those felted clogs.

September Is Winding Down

Project Updates:

-Finished Boneyard shawl for me made out of some handpainted sock yarn I got in NM. I think I want to do one more out of the black microfiber shawl that I finished a few months back.

-Started ribbed hat out of leftover silky merino Malabrigo smoke color yarn.

-Started fingerless gloves – testing pattern with this itchy wool sock yarn.

-Still have feather and fan shawl, boneyard malabrigo lace, red blanket on the needles.

And I am caught up with the Sookie Stackhouse novels. I bought all of them on Audible and am super excited to read #10 coming out next year. I also want to read the short story compliation “Touch of Dead”. I have many feelings about these novels, which I will share in a later post. I wish I could talk to someone about them. I will email my one internet friend who has read them all.

Am I Really Going To Do This?

I was curious about WordPress so I am creating this blog to see if I can re-invent myself. My other blog has been put on hiatus indefinately so I will keep this for myself for now. Although no one will read this, I kinda miss blogging. I miss writing down what I’m doing, what I’m reading, what’s happening. It kinda sucks when your blog gets out of hand and it becomes something different than what you wanted or expected. I don’t want to blog on Ravelry because there are some people on there that know me.
Anyway today I have started a scarf for my gf’s mom. It’s Loft yarn, some kind of self striping black/grey/white. I am using the Rainy Day Scarf pattern.

Last night I finished a hat for my gf L. It doesn’t have a name or a pattern, but I was inspired by a Hello Kitty picture from this book called “Hello Kitty Through The Seasons” by Kate T. Willamson. It has cute little Haikus with each picture and Hello Kitty is dressing in Build-A-Bear clothes. In one of the winter scenes, she’s wearing a hat that’s evened at the top with two pom-pom’s on the corners. So I made a test hat using k2p2 ribbing for 3 inches and stockinette for 6 inches then closed it off with a kitchener stitch. It looks cute. I think I want to make one for myself. I made one for my friend E. who’s birthday was yesterday, I think. Anyway, I have to give it to her. I am still debating on whether to attach pom-poms to it. My gf liked it so much I made one for her out of this weird Dralon/wool yarn that stained my bamboo needles. It’s grey striped. The one for E. is Loft yarn, magenta/mauve/pink striped.

I still want to make a bumble-bee ear-flap hat for myself. I need some yellow yarn.

My gf wants a felted purse so I have to look for some grey striped wool for that.

I also have the boots and the Tennessee scarf on my needles. I need to finish that Tennessee scarf this weekend.

See? This is boring already! I love it. No one cares about my knitting except ME!

How I Started Knitting

True story. My gf got into knitting and asked me to help her with a pattern. She had bought Stitch ‘n Bitch: The Knitter’s Handbook and wanted to knit me a hat from it. She had gone to her LYS in Virginia Beach, bought some needles and yarn and needed some help with a pattern. So then I bought the book too but I didn’t help her. Instead, I went to my LYS and signed up for a class. Then I got bit by the knitting bug and never looked back. She, however, never picked up needles again until just last winter to knit herself a scarf. By this time though, she had completely given up on ever learning how to knit. I couldn’t even show her how. She was just so stubborn about it. I think in her mind, she “gave” me the knit thing since I ran away with it. In turn, I bought her a sewing machine last year, so now her “thing” is sewing. I like to sew too but I like the knit thing much more. It’s too bad, I’m not much more than a novice at knitting. I should be beyond scarves, hats and socks by now. You’d think I would have knitted a sweater by now. Or at least that damn necklace she wants from the Domiknitrix book. It’s called a Gatsby necklace and she never lets me forget that I owe her one. One of these days I’m gonna take that book to Tempe Yarn and Fiber and get someone to help me understand the pattern.

In anycase, my gf got me into knitting so I could help her knit, then left me there holding the needles so I could figure out how to knit her stuff she sees in books.

Knit Things I Owe My GF:

1.) The Gatsby Necklace (Need pattern help)

2.) A felted bag (Need yarn)

3.) Felted Clog Boots (Which I have a kit/pattern and on my needles ATM!)

4.) Two other kits: Sushi Coin Purse and Boob Bag (It looks like a boob but it’s just a round felted bag.)

I love her for giving me this gift. I don’t know where I would be today without it. Probs bored and fidgety.

FOs, WIPs and Podcasts

1.) I finished a trapezoidal hat for me. Black and Zitron Loft yarn (Color: 590, Pumpkin/Brown) striped. I really enjoy this pattern. 3 inches k2p2 rib, 5 inches stockinette, close with Kitchener stitch so it’s squared off at the top, one pom-pom on each corner.

2.) I finished the Tennessee scarf for L. Inspired by Charmed Knits: Projects for Fans of Harry Potter by Alison Hansel. I used the First Year Scarf but I used orange and white, Lion Brand Micro Spun. It ended up being 21 panels of 19 rows of stockinette, knit in the round for 56(?) sts. Anyway the original pattern called for 19 panels but I made it a little longer by request. No fringe either, I just closed off the ends with a whip-stitch. My gf says it feels like butter and I am super jealous because I want a blue and red one! I have to wait until I can get some extra time and money. I could knit a black and white one or just a black one right now but I kinda want one for with the Red Sox colors. Except it won’t matter now since the Red Sox lost last night in Game 7 of the ACLS to Tampa Bay, so no World Series knitting for me this year. Who wants to watch Philadelphia and Tampa Bay? Not me.

3.) I started a dummy Clap scarf with the black Lion Brand Micro Spun on the bus this morning. I wonder how long it will take me. The pattern is very simple. CO 78 sts. Row 1: K2, *k1TBL, k4*, until last 6 sts; K1TBL, k5. Row 2: Purl across. Repeat for 50-55 inches (or 65). BO. It says to use a crochet bind off but screw that! I have no idea how I am suppose to get the yarn overs and drop stitches into this pattern so it looks like Clapotis. I might just do a prayer shawl k3p3 (2nd row opposite) so I can get a shawl. I need an easy shawl. I will try it for the ride home.

4.) My stomach is growling so loud, I need to get some food. I also need to write down a bbq recipe for L’s cousin. I am only saying this b/c I need to get some 4×6 index cards if I go out to get some food.
She already wrote it down.
5.) Vicki Howell’s podcasts are fun. I wonder what happened to them? I listened to one with Kelly Deal this morning on the bus. A.) Kelly Deal knits. B.) Kelly Deal has a knitting book coming out in November (maybe?) C.) The book is about knitted felted bags. D.) I have a feeling I will be tasked with knitting a bag from this book, should I get it for Xmas or buy it myself.

6.) I like WordPress much more than Blogger. I will have to research WordPress more to make my site kick-ass. Or at least more fun for me. I’ll have to look at some other knitting blogs to see how they get those widgets that track what their current WIPs are and how much % they have completed.

Bucket Bag and Hat Shop

Okay so I have started the felted bucket bag by mags kandis. I am using doubled yarn, Cascade 220, charcoal gray and Noro Kuryeon. The pattern suggests using chunky weight yarn but it says you can use any worsted wool just double it.

I was listening to CRL with Vicki Howell Ep 4 where she interviews one of her friends Jennifer Perkins about entrepreneurship in the craft world. Jennifer is the creator of the Naughty Secretary Club. In any case they were talking about starting your own craft empire and how there’s no excuse to not start your Etsy store.

So I got to thinking, now that the blog has come down, we still have all those contacts, all our friends online. I could conceivably start an Etsy shop selling knitted hats. I thought about this on the way home from walking S. to school.

I pick 5 patterns. Rolled brim, earflap, trapezoidal, stocking cap and maybe a cable? I haven’t knit a cable hat yet. Maybe I should do a practice one. Or just maybe a plain ribbed hat. Anyway, I give them the style choice then a design choice of solid or striped. Then a few color choices. I could invest in some yarn and make like 3 of each hat. That’s 30 hats (5 styles, 3 solid and 3 striped.) I would make them all one size. My size. Then sell them for $40.00 each plus shipping. I wonder if I could sell 30 hats. I wonder…

I Dreamed of Little Booties

So I had one of those snooze dreams that when Xmas time came around, I had a bunch of little booties that I had knit to put on the tags of all the gifts we had to give people. I had a bunch of orange and white ones for the Tennessee relations and red and green and white ones for everyone else. I am going to knit a few today. So I can get started on the stash…

WIPs:
1.) Rainy Day Scarf
2.) Black and White MicroFiber Scarf
3.) Snug boots
4.) Bucket Bag

I started gauging a sock for my mom.
I am putting the Hat Store on hold until after Xmas. I think the last pattern should be the Big Blue Beret.

I tried doing the Oh Scrap Shrug from Vicki Howell with some big chunky acrylic and fun fur that my mom gave me before I started knitting. It was a kit with size 17 needles. Anyway, I didn’t get the shrug pattern and when I tried to do just a plain knit row/purl row scarf, I kept dropping the sts. Then L. came in and said that the color was so offensive, I should just knit a charity hat or scarf out of it. I was hoping to play with it a little so I could knit something fun for her sisters. Maybe I should find some other kind of novelty yarn to knit up for them. I was so tired from untangling all the fun fur and acrylic, I just passed out during an episode of Discovery Health about a quintuplet birth.

We’ve been getting into Discovery Health lately. Freak show TV.

Anyway, L. looking at me strangely b/c it’s 7am.

Fundraising, Chickens, and Craft Ideas

So this weekend I have to make every effort to get a list of people to solicit donations forĀ  Making Stride’s Against Cancer Walk. I am committed to raise $495.00 by November 8th. That’s only two weeks! I am wondering if I should pull out all of SloganX’s blogspot contacts to help. I am only asking for $5.00 from each person but that would mean I have to ask 99 people to get to my goal. WOW! Do I know 99 people? I think I’ll just ask everyone who I think I can trust. I have to start making lists.

My WIPs are all going well. I am one skein away from completing the Felted bucket bag. My scarves haven’t gotten any longer. I need to work on the one for L’s mom. I am about to start the heel on my mini sock. I also need to get the gauge swatch done for my mom’s sock and the pattern printed out!

We need to work on Halloween costumes.

I baked a chicken last night, mistakenly, upside down and it turned out fabulous. I used an oven bag and I was trying to figure out why the skin wasn’t browning. Then when I went to cut it I was like, “Where’s the breast meat?” Duh, it was on the bottom. It all turned out okay and delicious despite my inability to tell which side of the chicken is up. Fry’s has whole chickens on sale for $.57/lb. I need to go back and buy two more! Who gets 5 lb. chickens for under $3.00? ME! I need to call my mother and tell her to buy like 5 of those suckers and freeze them for me.

I also saw an ID badge and key chain ideas at the Hallmark store yesterday. I need some kind of swivel for the bottom and a keychain type clasp for the ID holder. They sells those holders at Staples which I am going to go price. And I will need some glass beads. They used the seed beads for fillers. I would hate to buy one to use as an example. Maybe I can do it without buying one. The keychains might be harder to replicate. I will have to look for a “pattern” online.

Felted Bag Complete

So I finished the Felted Bucket Bag and it’s dried. It looks great, although the strap could have been wider and less ratted. I noticed a hole in the bag halfway through felting it so I had to patch it up and finish felting it. I used my tripod to dry it upside down with a bowl at the bottom of it.

She’s going to try to convince me to give it to her before xmas.

Now she wants a popcorn bag (yellow). And she wants a hat that’s on sale at Urban Outfitters. I think I’m just going to buy the hat since it’s on sale for $9.99. I will have to find some yellow chunky yarn for the other purse. That one might have to wait until I can get some other projects done.

I started a mock rib scarf for my mom.

Daylight Savings Time

So Daylight Savings Time went into effect yesterday. I really don’t understand why Arizona refuses to change time with everyone else. Basically, this fucks up everyone who has to deal with people nationwide. Like me. So we’re two hours ahead of the east coast and one hour ahead of the west coast. Whatever. So I have meetings at 11:00AM and 3:00PM on Monday and 11:00AM, 12:30PM and 3:00PM on Wednesday.

I sent my emails out to my old friends. I’ve managed 3 donations, (4 including my family) for a total of $135.00. Plus I am donating my hair. The walk is on Saturday at 7:00AM. The good news is that the boys will be with their dad. I wonder if L. is going to wake up with me to walk.

I am emailing my friend G. She told me that her oldest son E. is pregnant with his gf. They are both 22. G is going to be a grandmother! AHHHH! The baby is due in March. I have to call her this week if it kills me!

I bought My Sims Kingdom for my household and it’s so much fun! Even L. is playing. Hattie Belle. Belle is the middle name of her two great grandmothers. L trivia. I need to remember it.

WIPs: Pink and cream striped Toque. That’s the name of the Trapezoidal hat! It’s called a toque. I should look up the pattern in Ravelry.

Still have:

1.) Scarf for mom.

2.) Hat for mom (maybe might not need it.) Maybe I should just work on the socks for her.

3.) Scarf for L’s mom.

4.) Mini socks.

5.) B&W MicroSpun scarf.

It’s November. Time to panic. I need to make a list of people I absolutely have to make stuff for an what the hell I am making for them. ***Breathe***

President Elect Barack Obama

Sounds great doesn’t it? The victory was bittersweet in our house because Prop 102 passed here, banning gay marriage and Prop 8 passed in California removing the legality of gay marriage in that state. Rachel Maddow said it best last night. That it’s a major setback for gay rights in California because it’s already a right that the voters are taking away.

L is very upset about the whole thing. She wants to start writing to President Obama today.

Other than that the election results were fun to watch. His acceptance speech was great. He is too good to be true. It’s been a long 8 years.

Sunday Morning Quiet

I am drinking my coffee, thinking that I should update my WIPs.

1.) Mom’s scarf is done. It’s seed stitch. Which I’ve come to realize they also call the moss stitch. Whatever. I used this big chunky acrylic yarn in a fisherman color. I think I cast on 10 sts and did a p, k, repeat every row. They say if you CO an odd number you can do a k, p repeat every row and get the same effect. L. thinks it’s very pretty, and I think it’s b/c she loves the seed stitch so much. It’s reversible and looks like bumps when it’s done. Anyway, I just need to contact my mother before next weekend to give it to her.

2.) I finally bought some yarn for these Neck Cozy’s I’m suppose to be producing. I bought some Alpaca from Phoenix Needle on Friday and I went down to Tempe Yarn with L and the b’s yesterday. I bought 5 balls of Malibrigo from Terry and one needle felting kit called Wool Pets. We bought the kit that makes Snowmen but I need a mat for it. Not sure what to use in place of a mat tho. The yarn is gorgeous! I bought skeins for my bumblebee earflap hat (yellow and brown) and skeins for L’s mom’s Neck Cozy in a pale blue/aqua and light brown. Plus I bought a varigated green and yellow just for fun. I think I might use that one to make a seed stitch scarf for L. Either that or a small felt clutch purse. I need to work on those damn boots. I am doing a test Neck Cozy today to get familiar with this pattern. So I think I’m going to finish that up this morning if I can. We also bought a huge handmade button for L’s mom’s Neck Cozy. I can’t forget to go to the trunk show for GreenBean Buttons on Dec. 6th at Terry’s!

3.) I’m thinking I should knit some felted bowls for xmas. Then L. can pack them with little gifts. I have to find a pattern. I heard Leigh Radford on a podcast talk about felted bowls. I should see if I can get a pattern for that. She’s got some books out. Or I can look in that Mason Dixon book I borrowed from the library. Need to research.

4.) It Itches is a cute book by Franklin Habit. I read some of the cartoons in it at Terry’s store. I have to visit his blog soon.

I am running out of time, I fear for xmas gifts. I will have to use my time better in the next few weeks.

Thanksgiving Weekend, Time To Panic, WIPs

Finished:

1.) Bumblebee earflap hat.

2.) Neck Cozy for L’s mom. Needs buttons.

Still working on:

1.) Felted clogs, need to get going!

2.) B&W scarf. Will probably put on hold until after xmas.

Need to start:

1.) Felted Bowls. Have pattern from One Skein by Leigh Radford.

2.) Other projects for family. Maybe I need to learn how to knit Dickey’s for the men?

3.) Washcloths or Dishcloths?

4.) More neck cozy’s? Who gets one?

Time to panic.

25 Days To Go

We survived Thanksgiving! 20lb Turkey that I named Emmitt after Emmitt Cullen.

We also saw Twilight on Thanksgiving Eve. Awesome. Wanted more.

So here’s my X-Mas List of WIPs, FOs and People Who Aren’t Getting Any Damn Knitted Thing From Me:

Need To Start:
J’s Black Scarf – Using black LionBrand MicroSpun.

Miss M’s Red Scarf – Will use Red LionBrand MicroSpun. Need to buy, it’s on sale right now at Joann’s for $2.49 per skein. Need 3 skeins.

BJ’s Earflap Hat – Will use black and green Malabrigo.

Mom’s Scarf – Color/Yarn Unknown. May not make will look at what’s in stash.

StepMother’s – Acrylic hat. I owe her one from last year.

QuasiStepBrother’s Earflap Hat – Colors unknown.

WIPS:

Mom – Dishcloths – 4 Blue and White

Dad – Towels. Don’t know about this. Maybe I should just buy him a box of shamwows and leave it at that.

L’s Mom – Neck Cozy, finished, needs buttons.

L – Felted clogs, neck cozy. Still debating on 2nd purse, bought handles but need more yarn.

J – My boss. Should I give her the striped scarf?

People Who Will Not Get Anything Knitted:

QuasiStepFather – No idea what to make.

BJ’s GF – I don’t remember her name and I’ve never met her.

One Week To Go

Wowowow!

I am a slacker!

All I have managed to complete are:

1 scarf for my mother (started last year for L. asked if I could give it to my mother.)

1 bucket bag for L.

1 dishrag

1 dishtowel

4 felted bowls (2 left for A.)

3 felted bowls for L (1 given to Miss M. in lieu of red scarf)

Still need to complete:

1 scarf for J.

1 hat and 1 scarf for BJ

1 pigeon colored bowl for L.

Felted ornaments?

1 hat for stepmother

1 pair felted boots for L.

I should felt that coin purse for L. and I need to get to the yarn shop to figure out that damn Gatsby necklace. I wonder how late the yarn shop is open this weekend?

URGH, I need a drink.

How Time Flies

So it’s been over a month since I have posted anything and look at me! No guilt has befallen me. No comments to stare at. Just me and my thoughts.

I never did finish my brother’s scarf. I will continue to work on it despite it being too late for Christmas.

And I never got anything to my father and my step mother. How lame am I?

So for now, I am working on a scarf for my lovely L. It’s made from sock yarn and I fear I have no time left before her birthday on Feb. 8th AND I will run out of yarn. I might have to stop by Tempe Yarn this weekend. Oh the horror of it!

Tonight we are going to the Scottsdale Museum of Modern Art to see an exhibit called Subversive Knitting. L. promised me we would go because it ends this weekend and tonight (Thursday) it’s free to get in.

It’s getting warmer but some days it’s very cold. I will be sad when I can’t wear my Malabrigo anymore. I better go buy some so I can knit hats for those people who are living in cold weather (namely the sisters of L…)

Nostalgia

Been listening to the girls podcast and getting nostalgic for all the old peeps on the old blog. I need to talk to L. about it so I don’t do something stupid, like open up the old blog back again. I found some old links to see who has been blogging. Pretty much no one. I found one recent post but all others were from like last year! So sad. I miss some of the girls not everyone. I just want to see what they are doing. I don’t want to email them or anything like that. Maybe I will. I just don’t know.

I am just being stupid an nostalgic. Were we really the glue that kept the community going? I thought that was THE girls. Not us. Hmph.

Anyway I finished my helmet-like hat that matches my birthday scarf I bought at Anchor Blue. I also finished my ipod pouch.

Still working on a washcloth for me, made from birthday yarn that L’s mom bought me.

Still working on the scarf for my brother. Maybe I should just make him a hat and work on the scarf later. I can finish a hat in like 2 days.

Still working on a scarf for L’s mom. Have to finish that this weekend. (Yeah right.)

I want to make a pink and black earflap hat like the one on Animal Crossing! But I will have to make a matching scarf. It’s already getting warm here! OH NO!

Yes She Can Dance

So my gf L. finally succombed to the lack of commenting. She really likes it when people comment back to her. Although sometimes she hated it because it was so constant and demanding but secretly she loves it. I like it too but I also like just having a space to write and blog my thoughts. She didn’t like it so much when I did that on our blog before. So it’s best we keep separate spaces for things. Eventually, I will be linked or some smarty pants will find me here and that’s okay. I just want to keep this boring corner of the internet for my crafting and knitting rants. I felt like if I ranted about knitting on that other blog, people would look down on me for not being witty or mean. But sometimes I just want to talk about yarn. It’s really nerdly but I don’t always want to discuss GLBT things or girls and boobs. Sometimes I want to talk about what I see everyday that isn’t so interesting or maybe it’s so fucking boring no one but me gives a shit.

My dining room table is full of jewelry making stuff. No matter how much stuff is on it, it’s just not enough. There could always be more. More beads and baubles and tiny little widgets. I hope she sells some necklaces. I hope people are nice to her. I hope they like her wares and if they don’t I hope they keep it to themselves. She really hopes people will like the stuff she makes. I do and I hope they are generous to her. Whatever she’s asking for them it’s not enough. She tends to aim low. She doesn’t think her stuff is worth anything but it is. It’s made with care and love and she if people knew how high her standards were, they would tip her extra for making beautiful things.

Did I mention I am sappy too?

***update: My friend G. is a grandma. She has a grandson named Micah Solomon. Born Feb 28.2009. Pisces. Wow.

Happy Square Root Day!

3-3-09

Rachel Maddow told me so. And the next Math Day will be Pi day, 3.14.

NERDLY RULES!

this is what it looks like under the bus

Don’t you just hate it when you’re using a varigated yarn and the colors are transitioning along nicely then BAM! You find the darkest color tied in a knot to one of the lightest colors in the varigation?

So I’m knitting this moss stitch scarf for L’s mom. (It’s her b-day today and it’s not a late b-day gift, it’s something she asked me to make when she came to visit a few weeks ago.) She picked out this nice gray-charcoal-black varigated yarn (in fact I already had some of this yarn in my stash and it stained my bamboo needles! So now I am knitting with these aluminum needles that I have never used or bought before but at least it’s not staining!) Anyway, it started with the black at the bottom and it didn’t come back around until BAM! The black was tied with a knot to one of the lighter gray colors. Urgh. This scarf is going to take me forever b/c she asked for 74 inches and I’m only 26 inches in. I actually think 74 is too long but she wants to do some kind of knotting with it so it’s the width of a necktie but I think over 6 ft is too long to do anything with… We’ll see when I get around 60 inches what it looks like. It will stretch too when she knots it up (I’m hoping.)

“Yeah, everything is all ready, just waiting on a scarf.”

(Translation: the rest of the care package that isn’t really ready mom, it’s just easier to throw the knitter under the bus because her stuff takes so damn long to finish.)

Oh and I was in a waiting room yesterday, knitting my other procrastinated project (bro’s garter stitch scarf) and the person calling out names, called on someone (not me) and then looked at me and walked over to see what I was knitting. Like a dumbass I said, “Sorry that’s not me,” and she says “Oh no, I’m just looking to see what you’re knitting.” It was bizarre but it made me wonder what she has on her needles at the moment.

Batting 1000

I have one word for today. Shitastic.

-I was up in the middle of the night with stomach issues (I will let you figure that one out.)

-I woke up tired and needing more sleep and realizing I couldn’t call into work b/c I have a shit-ton to do today, plus 2 meetings in the office to attend, I was very much out of it this morning.

-Because I was out of it, I forgot my phone at home.

-When I get to work, I am still so tired and un-coordinated, when making my coffee, I open the liquid creamer packet and miss my cup, dumping all over the counter face down.

It’s only 9:00AM and I fear what the rest of the day has in store for me. I will update later or tomorrow.

(Oh and I had a dream that I went to KP09 with all my knitted hats and sold them all for $20.00 a piece. I had to hand wash them and put tags on them that said “Handmade by Slo” on them but I sold every one. –I wonder what I did with the money? Did I buy more yarn? –I think I was also taking orders to make more hats too. Crazy.)

There’s Not Enough Tequila

Okay so maybe I had too many shots of tequila last night. Not enough to make me sick but enough to dull the pain of watching the Series Finale of the L Word. But in the end there wasn’t enough. That show sucked. Nothing got resolved. Absolutely nothing. This whole season was a waste. Showtime just should have pulled the plug last season when it had the chance. Ilene Chaiken gave us nothing for her final season. She could have recovered from her season 3 debacle of killing off Erin Daniels but she didn’t. She never recovered. Since then, I think the fans have been bitter and unforgiving. Sure it was groundbreaking for TV but overall it was heartbreaking for women who loved the show. Betrayal by one of our own.

In other news I finished L’s mom’s scarf. Blocked it and it’s ready to ship!

Starting a re-knit of SWTC scarf. Still need to finish bro’s garter scarf.

Whisper This

1.) Pick up a copy of Interweave Knits Spring 2009.

2.) Analyze pattern for Whisper Cardigan by Hannah Pettig.

3.) Determine if it’s do-able without going to the LYS for help.

4.) Go to LYS and buy 2 skeins of 220yds merino lace yarn or the like.

5.) Attempt to knit the above pattern.

6.) Just try it because if you don’t you are doomed to never start or finish anything resembling a sweater.

7.) Until then, finish your brother’s god damn scarf so you can use the leftover black Malabrigo for a pink and black earflap hat like the one on Animal Crossing!

8.) Do not pass go, do not collect $200.00.

9.) Eat your lunch, do not even think about McDonald’s french fries and Dr. Pepper for lunch!

10.) You can stop listening to Tegan and Sarah’s “The Con” any fucking time now.

11.) Stop talking to yourself on your blog, people will think you’re weird.

12.) Don’t forget to watch Lost tonight.

Dollhouse Questions Outloud

1.) Why is Alpha trying to break Echo from the Dollhouse’s control?

2.) Who is Adelle’s boss?

3.) Why is Joss Whedon writing about mind control like this?

4.) Isn’t it kinda sick that these girls can be prostitutes but have no memory of it?

5.) What happened to Caroline/Echo to get her into this Dollhouse program?

6.) If Echo breaks free, will her handler Boyd go along with it?

7.) Will the other 2 Dolls (Sierra and Lubov) go along with Echo if she breaks free?

8.) Why isn’t there a decent fucking podcast about this show?

9.) How are the Whedonite’s taking in this new show? Do they like it?

10.) Will this show survive a full season? (We think Joss has got to hurry up and move the plot just in case it gets canceled like Firefly.)

Anything else?

Knitted Bikinis

I just read my page-a-day calendar authored by the Yarn Harlot (who is the funniest knitting blogger EVAR) and she makes a good point:

“Since we’re approaching spring break, I though that now would be a really good time to mention that there are very few knitted bikinis–no matter how cute they are–that will actually stay up when wet.”

Then I thought–I should be making those for every cute girl I know…

And I joined a hat swap group on Ravelry. Ravelry is the best thing since sliced bread. We found a LGBT swap on Craftster yesterday but it’s got these strict guidelines for joining, I guess b/c there’s been too much fraud on that site… idk. But I’m not sure how I’m suppose to be a part of 2 swaps if no one will let me join as a new swapper. I’m gonna stick with Ravelry. I just wish there was something like this for L and her jewelry or sewing. Some really smart crafter needs to create a Ravelry-esque place for the beader’s and sewing communities.

i.am.going.to.log.my.yarn.stash.this.weekend. (repeating in my head….)

Gladys

Gladys is the name of my new headform that I bought at a neighborhood wig shop called Gee Wigz. I took a bunch of pictures of all the hats I have made that I still have in my possession. I am trying to post them to Ravelry. I never got to my yarn stash but I did log in my needles. This is more work than I thought. I might never log in my stash. I’m still trying to label all my hats! It’s hard b/c I don’t remember the name of the colors. Luckily I am such a pack rat I have kept most of my ball bands. I think I have an un-natural attraction to Malabrigo yarn. They just make the best hats!

So now I guess I have to photograph my scarves and socks.

I finished my bro’s garter stitch scarf.

I started a Cloche hat for L. It’s from Debbie Stoller’s Vintage Girl Cloche. Not sure how it’s going to turn out. Using Malabrigo Worsted, in a yellow colorway called Sauturne. It reminds me of the color of buttered microwave popcorn. A deep yellow.

I never got to the store to get the Interweave Knits magazine. It might have to wait. I am travelling for my job on Wednesday. I doubt I will get to a knit shop before then.

We watched Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist this weekend. And Little Women. Gawd, Little Women makes us cry 3 or 4 times during the movie! So dramatic. Nick and Norah was cute. I need the soundtrack. I am trying to find it.

Twilight comes out on DVD next weekend. Can’t wait.

___

So I finished logging in my hats. Then I realized that I have a bunch of hats that I’ve given away that I never took any pictures of… I think they are all variations of these hats that I have logged in. L’s got a few that I’ve made her that are in storage in TN but I’m not sure if I’m ever going to see those any time soon. Oh and I should take a pic of L’s floppy tam. I wonder where she’s hiding it?

And I can’t seem to find my cotton hat. I wonder where it’s hiding?

Half Double Crochet

So I actually bought a hat pattern off the internet. It kinda pisses me off b/c it’s not anything spectacular like a sweater or something. It’s a hat. The pattern looks a lot like this other one that’s free! Anyway, I’m trying not to get too angry about it. But I do have to learn how to HDC. And increase. And basically learn how to crochet a hat. Deep breath. It’s probably not that hard at all, right?!

I’m going to test this pattern tonight with the Charcoal Cascade. So many damn grey hats! Good thing it’s a nice color. I mean I could’ve picked a green yarn to make that sweater but I’m happy I picked grey.

Gray or Grey?

The yellow cloche is almost done. I don’t think L will like it, that’s why I bought this pattern. And I downloaded a bunch of cloche variations off Ravelry.

I tend to over-do things.

But if we get a bunch of extra hats out if it, I can just pawn them off on people. Or make L’s sell them on her blog. I wonder if she would?

Crochet This

It’s do-able. It’s just effing hard to count. This is a top-down hat that increases every round. So my brain has to count the stitches in between instead of the total number of stitches in the row.

id est: Inc every 5th st. (48 hdc)

This is me on the bus this morning:

my brain: 1 hdc, 2hdc, 3hdc, 4hdc, 5hdc-6hdc (same hole)…wait is that 5? (goes back) 1,2,3,4,5–okay 6 in the same hole as 5. (Starts again…) Wait I have to mark the 1st hdc so I know where my round begins. (Goes back) Is this the first one? Or this one? SHIT!!!! (Marks stitch) Okay 1-2-3-4-5-6… 1hdc, 2hdc…. ALL THE WAY AROUND…. okay there’s my marker. (Closes eyes, takes a deep breath and counts stitches.) 1…..48. Wait how many was it suppose to be? (Looks at pattern) 48! (DEEP SIGH.) Fuck 2 more increase rows to go… This-is-why-I-don’t-crochet…

L went to the bookstore and bought the Interweave Knits Spring 2009 magazine for me. The Whisper Cardigan looks okay… I mean I’m fuzzy on the short rows (wrapping a stitch)? but there’s a stitch glossary. Hmmm… I won’t let it intimidate me! No! I’m just going to shop for yarn and get it over with! It’s going to be wompy no matter how much I convince myself ! (See me convincing myself?) Whatever!

I’ll probs think of a dozen other projects to do INSTEAD of the sweater.

I didn’t watch any tv last night. I didn’t even play wii. I did watch 2 videos on youtube on how to hdc. This lady did an entire cloche hat on 2 videos. I love/hate knitting/crocheting videos. I love it b/c it’s easy to learn new stitches but I hate it b/c it’s often blurry and these women and their acrylic fucking nails is g-r-o-s-s. Eww…right. So if you have nails, then fine, that’s your business, no really, I am not prejudiced at all. Maybe clean fingernails is just a pet peeve of mine. Right? Okay and explain to me how a gay woman can have acrylic nails. I mean, really now! I work with a woman who does that. She’s butchier than I am! No really, short cropped hair, sensible shoes, tucked in button down shirts, the whole-9-effin’-yards. But yet she still has long painted acrylics. Is it for show? I mean she plays golf for crying out loud. I just don’t understand these matters, what so ever.

Okay that went some place else….

I have to work now.

Crocheting The Night Away

Yeah baby, I made that damn cloche and I started another one after my business trip. It’s almost done. The pattern is a little jacked tho. It says to crochet 8 rounds after you finish the increasing but 8 rounds makes a yarmulke not a hat. I think I doubled it and got the correct size. So yeah maybe my gauge was off. I used a size H hook b/c I can’t find my hooks! I have a whole bunch but I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t want to buy anymore b/c I will eventually find my case. Maybe I just need to dump all my stash boxes. It’s there somewhere.

I am almost done with the single sock for L. I started it on my business trip. I need to knit a few more rounds then decrease the toe. I need to get the other one started before I make the single sock an orphan.

The hat exchange is closed. A few people dropped out so there’s like 78 members. Both Lena and Sock joined but I created a post so that we don’t get paired up. I guess it’s going to be a daisy chain swap. So the person who makes my hat isn’t the same person I am making a hat for… I wonder how long the swap will last? Will we go through the whole group? I’ve never been in something like this. I hope it goes well.

I had a bad day yesterday. I tried to cook a roasted chicken in a cast iron skillet and I burned myself twice. Once on the arm with the oven, trying to get the damn thing in the oven then on my left thumb when I tried to get the skillet out again to turn the chicken. Ummm, stupid! I should have known to use 2 mitts instead of just the one. I have this huge blister on my thumb and it hurt so bad I thought I was going to vomit. Luckily, it’s healing and just numb. I can still knit! Which is really all that matters. The chicken was good, although I wish I could have enjoyed it more.

I watched Twilight over and over again. Watched the commentary, the deleted scenes, the extended scenes. I need to watch it backwards b/c I often fall asleep before the final battle between James and Edward.

Socks Done

l's-socks1

I started these on my business trip and completed them today. I guess I should post them on Ravelry. I’ll take a better picture when I get home.

Now I get to start on my hat exchange project. I’m going to do a test with some Malabrigo so I can get the pattern right. I need to gather some things to send to this girl also. She likes handmade stuff. Maybe I should needle felt her something too.

I should knit more socks since it’s getting too warm to knit hats. I’m still wearing them though. I need some cotton yarn.

I am not looking forward to fixing my home pc this weekend. I kinda just want to relax since this week has been so shitty. ***sigh***

Do They Want People To Ride or Not?

I just got some very upsetting news that they are going to raise the Bus/Rail fares here in Phoenix effective July 1, 2009. It’s so ridiculous! The fare that I pay for now, is going to go up $2.00 a fucking day. And to make matters worse, if I buy my fare on the bus I have to pay an extra $1.75. So today my bus fare is $3.50 if I buy it on the bus. Starting July 1, the same trip will cost me $7.25! Are you fucking joking? If I buy a month’s pass it’s $85.00, compared to today’s price which $68.00. OMFG. I want to write nasty letters to the people who decided to do this. Either that or I need to live so close to my job that I can fucking bike to work. This is stupid!!! I’m so upset right now.

She’s Judging Me

The Sad Apple is judging me. I walk up to her and ask her like an oracle, “Why are you so sad?”

The artist told us the story of his inspiration for her. A girl in one of his college classes sat in the back of the class with the same look on her face.

I finished my Hat Exchange hat. Pictures will go up after I mail the package. I need to find some other goodies to include in it. I should have picked up some Phoenix stuff at the farmer’s market yesterday but I will definately get some on Saturday.

We drove around last night to find Portland 38 . It’s in a horrible neighborhood and there are 2 tenants in the entire complex. It’s beautiful though.

Watched City Of Ember. Good representation of the book. Saiorse Ronan plays Lina. She’s Irish. Her name is pronounced “seer-sheh”, it means “freedom”. Pretty name.

Opening Day

I went out to Frances and Stinkweeds for lunch to get some free stuff for my hat exchange partner. There were all kinds of people going to the ballpark for the Diamondbacks Opening Day game. When I got back to my office, I heard the roar of jets and saw 4 fighter jets fly straight down 7th Ave over the open roof of the ballpark. Pretty cool to see from my 18th story office. I’ve only seen it from the ballpark. Must ask mother for some free tickets.

Started the Opie Hat with some laceweight Malabrigo. It’s going to take forever. But it’s so soft I don’t even care. Still working on more socks.

I want the Easter Bunny to bring me a ball-winder from KnitPicks. Maybe next payday I can order one…

BSoD

BSoD = Blue Screen of Death. My home pc has died and I am at my wits end to try to recover it. The last backup I did was in January but I have a bunch of pics that were downloaded that didn’t get backed up after that. I wanted to cry myself to sleep last night at the futility of the situation. There’s not much more I can do unless I pour through endless forum posts to try to find out how to resolve the problem. I will have to look this weekend online for my particular chkdsk error. If I can’t recover it, I will have to re-install Windows and move on, I suppose.

The worst of all is that we have pics from L’s mom’s visit that didn’t get backed up and were removed from my camera’s memory card. Very sad.

In other news, I mailed off my bro’s Jayne hat and scarf and also my hat exchange partner’s hat. I wonder when I’ll get mine.

Still working on the Opie hat. It’s taking forever!

Hats Rec’d

My hat came in the mail on Friday. It’s a colorful brown striped tam. Very warm. I wore it most of the day Saturday b/c it was cold and rainy. Saturday we went to the Japanese Friendship Garden. It’s so serene. There’s a tea house in the back where they do a tea ceremony by reservation. Pretty cool. There were so many koi in the pond, big fat ones! They were very hungry.

My bro rec’d his hat and liked it! L said one of her blog readers wants me to sell her one. I’ll have to get on that soon.

The hat I made for my hat exchange person arrived also. She liked it and the little black sheep I needle felted for her. I also made some stitch markers, which I need to make for myself, just as soon as I get back to the bead shop. I should make a list of markers I want to make so I get the right amount of letters.

knit, purl, inc, dec, ssk, ssp, slst, yo, k2tog, m1, psso, pm, co

Just did the count. Need to put it on a note card and take it with me to the shop.

L’s sunflowers are still perky. I bought her some for Easter from the farmer’s market. :)

Earth Day

I finished my Opie hat on Monday on the bus. I was able to close it without a yarn needle. Just in time for the first 100 degree day (yesterday) but it didn’t matter since I was inside the entire day. Chained to my desk as it were. Same probs for today. I think I want another hat like this but in white. I have a skein of black lace Malabrigo but black is too dark for summer. Blue is nice but it doesn’t go with everything. I knew I should have bought the white instead of the black Malabrigo!

Anyway, I am going to try to knit Rosalie Hale’s scarf. I haven’t tried doing a lace pattern yet and I have some Microspun from my stash that I can use. It’s pretty simple stitches just hard to keep track of. We’ll see how that goes.

Still knitting ankle socks with Luna Park 201 (what I call retro 80′s colors – lime green, orange, hot pink…) they should be cute.

Earth Day – Why isn’t everyday Earth Day?

Saturday we went down to Roosevelt (Rooooos-evelt) row to a space called Modified Arts to see Faythe Levine author/director of Handmade Nation speak/sign books and show her documentary movie. It was a great movie! I want it on DVD so I can recommend it to everyone who can’t go to a viewing. It’s so strange to see these crafters and artists in person because they are so famous in the crafting circles. The Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo was there in the audience. I said hello to her after the show. It’s awkward to talk to them b/c what do you say besides “I’m a fan and thank you for doing what you do.”

Afterward we went to some of the shops on Roosevelt, Made and Bunky. Made is a small boutique that really didn’t have as much cool stuff as we’d hoped it would. Frances has more merch and more to look at. I found a few handmade scarves that were ridiculously priced. The wool wasn’t anything special or nice and they were crocheted. They wanted 80, 70 and 60.00 for them. I couldn’t believe it! I was trying to figure out if maybe they were marked so high because they were in the store and the store had to take a percentage of it. Then I found some wool hats that had no price on them. I did find a handmade scarf that was from Chile that was made from Merino wool. It was pretty but it was too overpriced. It was made from one of those “templates”. I only say that b/c I don’t know what it’s called. It’s a blank while grid that you weave yarn through one end and comes out the other side. You see the while grid in the end. Anyway, I should find out what that’s called. There’s a craft lady I see doing it all the time, I will ask her what it’s called. I ended up buying a VenusZine and L an ceramic ornament.

Bunky was a fun boutique. Our UPS driver told us he owned it about a year ago. When we did the shipping for the planet, we got a lot of deliveries at the house and L said one day that the UPS driver told me he owned a boutique downtown with his fiance. We pass it every Saturday morning going to the Farmer’s Market and we finally went in. L was trying on some clothes and I asked the guy at the front if he was the owner/UPS guy and he said yes. We had a nice conversation and talked about Faythe Levine. He had met her the night before b/c it was First Friday. L bought a couple of shirts and I got a scarf then BunkyOwner/Jim recommended some places to eat (SENS and PASTA BAR) and we were off.

Unfortunately, SENS wasn’t open and we went to the bar next door where I had my first Hoengarten White Beer. It’s ironic b/c I had a conversation with Vic and she was telling me how cheap beer was in France (Heinekin and Hoengarten are 9 Euro for 20 bottles.)

Anyway, I spent much of Sunday researching Sublime Stitching and sketching designs for an embroidery project. I want to make a handkerchief with some knitting designs. If I can get the hang of it, I am going to do it to some of my shirts. I am also reading up on Jenny Hart’s VenusZine articles about Crafting A Business. It’s pretty good.

SO BUSY!

I have been so busy I have neglected my blog. You could have guessed that…

DFW IJ

Laneia said to me “We have to read this book.”

David Foster Wallace’s – Infinite Jest.

Then follow along with Infinite Summer.org which is a massive book club that is reading this book 75 pages per week all summer long.

She brings home a copy and I’m looking at this tome, this doorstopper, this brick of a book and I’m like “Uh ok.”

So I get myself a copy and start reading it. I’m taking notes, marking up the book, going online to get some resources, motoring along and Laneia reads one chapter and she’s like “I don’t give a shit about this story.” And doesn’t pick it up again. **Sigh**

So I’m a week behind and trying to catch up. I am a little behind the reading schedule but I think I can get through it. Some of it is ridiculously hard to understand. For example, you’ll see a endnote, you go to the endnote and it’s 25 pages long! Then you are suppose to understand what the frick is going on. I have no idea about some of the stuff. I have ordered a reader’s guide to help me figure some of this stuff out. People are talking about spoilers and trying to figure out stuff on their own but at this point I just don’t care. If something gets spoiled accidentally, then so be it.

I read somewhere that you’re lucky if you get 50% of what DFW is trying to say the first time you read it, you’re doing well! WTF!

It reminds me of watching LOST. None of these elements within the first 200 pages are not going to make any fucking sense whatsoever. I just have to bear through it and hope somewhere down the road it makes sense.

It is fun though, ridiculous as the book is, the fun is the journey of reading it.

The Internet Continues To Surprise

I am blog stalking again. One person in particular. She doesn’t know it and I don’t want to comment b/c I don’t want her to edit b/c I am reading her. It’s so interesting what you can learn about someone from reading their blog.

Schlafly Beer No. 15. Yes.

Shakespeare Pizza cups. Yes. So omg yesterday, I was working away from my desk, we have these computers setup in a general area where everyone can login to customer’s locations. It’s called the Common PC area. So I was over there and I kept seeing these phone books that looked like they were going to be re-cycled or something. I kept seeing them when I walked by and then I finally read them. They were from Columbia, MO. I freaked out and opened one and found the coupons and menu for Shakespeare Pizza. Long story continuing… a planet friend Sarah sent us a package last year with Schlafly beer and these plastic cups from Shakespeare Pizza. She said everyone in Columbia (Mizzou students esp.) go to this place and drink beer and take home the cups. So she sent us two. Well they are L’s favorite cups. In fact, I never get to use them, or I don’t use them b/c I know she will give me this look like “Why are you using my cup?” I mean even though there are clearly two cups! One is usually dirty and the other is being used by her. So yesterday I txtd Sarah telling her of this Columbia, MO phonebook find and she txtd me today. I asked her what brand of beer it she sent so I could look it up and I could tell her exactly which one we loved. It was No. 15. And I asked her to send more cups. She said she would and just to make me jealous, she said she was off to lunch at Shakespeare Pizza!

115 degrees this weekend.

Free Slurpee Day tomorrow.

Vintage Picnic can bite me. $30.00 for 2 pieces of luggage that will cost $50.00 to ship from Calgary. No effing way. Better to look on etsy.

Sookie Stackhouse Series

So I am taking a short break from Infinite Jest only b/c my reader’s guide came in and I want to catch up on that before I continue. The book is getting good but in the meantime I went onto Audible and purchased Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. It pretty much covers the first season of True Blood with some minor changes.

1.) Where is Tara? She isn’t in the book so far. HUNH? She’s one of my favorite characters from the series! OMG. I wonder if she shows up in the later books.

2.) There are 7 books total in this series.

3.) Sookie’s internal monologue is greatly missed from the show. The books are told her POV. Somehow they are doing it justice in the True Blood series minus this one thing.

4.) I’m not sure I would like the series as much as I do if I had read these books first. Maybe so, but I’m a loyal fan of authors and not-s0-much a fan of movie and tv series translations.

5.) I wonder why they added Tara to the series?

6.) I need to find someone who read the books first and is watching the show now to get their insight. I think I know of someone that I may write an email to later.

7.) I need to get L. to listen/read so I can talk about it with her.

8.) This is totally going to throw off my Infinite Jest time line for reading 75 pages per week.

Yay My GF Came Out!

http://www.autostraddle.com/autostraddle-roundtable-when-i-knew-i-was-gay-part-1/

I have been wanting her to do this for a long time.

I am happy.

Infinite Avoidance

Ha! So I put the book down and I haven’t picked it up again. Instead, I have read 3 Sookie Stackhouse books (I think there are 9 total now, who knows?) and downloaded Julie and Julia because I want to go see the movie, finished my first shawl, watched old French Chef and Frugal Gourmet eps on the internet…

Basically totally avoided finishing Infinite Jest. I will probably pick it back up later, but not for a while. It totally sucks b/c I was doing so well keeping up with the weekly updates on Infinite Summer.

Well summer is over for me. The kids are back in school this week. It’s kinda weird to have everyone wake up with me again. All summer, I had gotten ready for work in silence, tip-toeing around the house and slinking out relatively quietly.

True Blood was awesome last night. A lot of what is happening on the show isn’t in the books. I could have totally gone all my life without seeing a heart cut up and sauteed in a pan though. GROSS! And the news that the Sookie and Bill are engaged in real life, just disappointing. Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer in real life? He looks so old! Maybe it’s just the show’s makeup doing that to him. And he’s British? wtf? **sigh**

Godric is so tiny next to Eric. I heart them both.

Update 12:30pm:

So I am wearing my shawl and one of my co-workers wants me to make one for her mother. She asked me how much I would charge for one. I’m thinking $50-60.00. It’s nothing special. It’s just a big scarf with an inch garter sts around, 15 inches of stockinette wide, 68 inches in length. Shit. I think I cast on 250 sts on a #10 circ (21 inches long.) I didn’t count the skeins b/c it was all half started “scrap” (Lion Brand – Micro Spun Acrylic) I think I used 4-5 skeins? Should I do it? Idk. L. wants me to make her a red blanket like this shawl. If I start that now, it might be done by Christmas. I just got all panicky about Christmas.

Maybe I Don’t Know What A YO Increase Is…

OMFG.

I started this Feather and Fan shawl last night. I found it on the KnitPicks website. It looks easy! Easy Lace. Yeah right.

CO 110.

R1: Knit

R2: Purl

R3: K1, *[k2tog] 3 times, [yo, k1] 6 times, [k2tog] 3 times; repeat from * to last st K1.

R4: Knit

Repeat rows 1-4 until desired length. Bind off loosely.

So…yeah, I’ve cast this on twice and done one completed 1-4 rows. The first time I got all the way to the end of the 2nd repeat and there was something amiss. I had extra sts. on the end. So I tink until I get about half way backwards on my last row and everything looks ok. Maybe I just mis-counted. I re-knit the 5th row… no… still extra sts! I take everything off and start over.

This morning on the bus. After I knit row 4 I count. Too many. How many? 136! 26 more?! WTF! I recount. Shit. I take them all off then lookup YO increase on the KnitPicks website.

Hunh. Maybe I don’t know what a yo increase is after all.

I go to Walgreens to get a Squirt soda and a bag of potatoe chips. Then I proceed back to my office and open my lunch box and write this post. It’s 10:30AM.

Yarn is still unraveled in my ziploc bag waiting to be CO again.

Update 12:40pm:

Yay! I fixed it. I realized that I wasn’t repeating from *. I was alternating the K2togs and the YO, K1 groups. So I ended up with the correct count!

p.s. paperclips are the ugliest stitch markers. I only had 3 markers on me. I’m not sure why I don’t keep a stash in my coin purse or my pen bag. I will rectify tonight!

Rainy Days Make Me Sleepy

I don’t feel like working today. I feel like sleeping! Actually, I feel like alternating sleeping and knitting. So I have been looking on Ravelry and various knitting blogs for shawl inspirations. My Feather and Fan shawl is coming along nicely, besides my little hiccup this morning where I suddenly came up one stitch short and realized that I f-ed up the rows of knit-purl-f/f-knit and it made the 4 row pattern look back-ass-wards. So I frogged about 3 rows and still came up one stitch short! Oh well, I added an extra stitch and soldiered on. I only have about 4 more feet to knit! Jeez!

So I am getting distracted by seeking another easy shawl pattern for potential Christmas gifts.

My gf said she wanted a feather and fan scarf for Christmas. I’m thinking about getting some Malabrigo lace for that one. Then I have her blanket to do. I have to buy the yarn at least to begin the blanket this weekend.

And I see that my LYS just got a shipment of Malabrigo today! I have to go over there this weekend to snatch up some Malabrigo lace. I want to make another Opie hat and one for L.

I mentioned to L. last night what I should do about Christmas gifts for her family this year. She said “I can’t talk about that right now with you.” I said I was thinking out loud because after all it is August! I mean, it’s going to be here before get all of my own fun stuff out of the way. Non-knitters just don’t understand, I can’t whip out a nice gift two weeks before Christmas.

We going to do that touristy thing around Nashville this year for Christmas. I can’t wait! We got all excited wondering what knitted things we’re going to wear around the city! And what we’re going to sightsee. I can’t wait!

Shawl Woes

So I started another shawl on Friday. I used this dark Kaffe Fasset sock yarn. Then I knit about 60 rows of it then decided I really didn’t like the colors. Plus the shawl pattern was a bit different than what I printed out. I only altered it b/c I didn’t know how to do M1L and M1R and substituted yo’s. In any case, I took them off my needles last night and grabbed some different sock yarn.

Today, I watched a video on how to M1L and M1R and it looks much better.

It’s called the Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West. I found it in a roundabout way. I listened to the KnitPicks podcast on Friday and heard someone mention his pattern for a Daybreak Shawl but decided I didn’t want to pay $5.00 for it. So I found this Boneyard Shawl of his on Ravelry for free. The one on his blog uses yo’s but the Ravelry one uses M1L and M1R. Anyway, I’ll get the Daybreak Pattern someday maybe.
I did buy some Malabrigo at Tempe Yarn and Fiber. I bought some Eggplant sock yarn for L’s Feather and Fan scarf. And 3 lace weight skeins (natural, chocolate and applewood) for Opie hats. I want to make them all and bring them all to Nashville!

Then I bought 6 skeins of Red LionBrand Microspun for L’s blanket.

And I bought an Addi Turbo #4 – 16″. I love Addi Turbos. I would love their interchangeable kit. Someday… **sigh**

Knitting In Public

Every once in a while, I am asked about my knitting while I’m on the train or bus. Today, it was on the train. I was listening to my ipod and a nice lady asked me about my needles. I was knitting the Boneyard Shawl on 32″ circs and she asked if using that needle was easier than the long straights. I thought it was a curious question. Because I could quite gauge what level she was at. Turns out, she doesn’t knit at all, but she crochets. So I gave her the names of Phoenix Knits and Needlepoint and Tempe Yarn and Fiber. Plus I happen to have a calendar from TYF that I picked up when I bought my Malabrigo on Saturday, so I gave that to her and told her to sign up for Bev Walker’s Beginner Knit Class. Turns out this lady, Diane, works in my building on the 16th floor. I gave her my card b/c she said she wanted to show me her crochet stuff. Small world hunh?

Project Update

1.) Boneyard Shawl – Coming along nicely. Just started 2nd skein of yarn. Looks like I will have enough to finish. Hoping to finish by next week.

2.) Feather and Fan Scarf, need to build more rows.

3.) Natural Opie hat, need to build more rows.

4.) FO – Small cotton bowl for L. to hang next to her desk.

5.) Need to CO red blanket for L.

6.) Need to buy yarn and bottle for L’s Scavenger Hunt Prize. To be done w/in the next 2 weeks.

I joined a couple of Ravelry groups for True Blood and Knit One Dead Two – A Charlaine Harris group – the Author of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I looked on the forums a bit and found that on Knit One Dead Two, there was a Crochet-A-Long for Lafayette’s Afghan. These ladies were seriously analyzing the pics and colors of the blanket, which is something I would TOTALLY do! In fact I had to stop myself b/c I don’t need to CO a random blanket right now.

I’m hoping someone will help me find a pattern for Sookie’s blanket/shawl.

Projects Moving Along Nicely

1.) FO. Boneyard Shawl. It blocked really well and E-X-P-A-N-D-E-D. Nice. I should block things more often.

Boneyard Shawl - Finished and Blocked.

Boneyard Shawl - Finished and Blocked.

2.) Feather and Fan Scarf – Malabrigo Sock yarn – Eggplant. #4 straights. About 6 inches long. I keep having to Frog it b/c I miss an extra yo. I have to be diligent and count after every row. Hate that!

3.) CO red blanket for L. 150 sts. Size 7, 32″ circ. I have an inch of garter st and it looks like it will be wide enough. Roughly 36 in wide. It will probs stretch out a bit. I hope.

4.) Opie Hat – Malabrigo Lace – Natural – size 4, 16″ circ. Only a few rows done.

Of course my lovely gf now wants a Boneyard Shawl in dark gray. I looked all over the internet for the yarn and I think I found some. I have to order it on payday. I want to make another one for myself, but which color? Brown? Definately need a solid color.

I borrowed this awesome new book from the library. It’s called a Fiber Gathering: Knit, Crochet, Spin and Dye More Than 25 Projects Inspired by America’s Festivals by Joanne Seiffe. I have to go to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival before I die. I can’t believe I lived about an hour away from that festival for 25 years and never went. I guess I should have learned how to knit earlier in life. Just think of where I would be now? Oh well… it’s never too late to appreciate handspun, hand dyed wool.

September Progress

Labor Day has come and gone.

I managed to order and receive some Malabrigo Silky Merino in the Smoke colorway from a small yarnshop in Nebraska called Personal Threads. I can’t even get my local LYS to get any gray Malabrigo but I found it here and ordered 4 skeins for L’s Boneyard shawl. I have been knitting it for a week straight now and it’s almost done. I am about to finish it up and work in the 3rd skein. I might make a matching hat out of the remaining yarn.

So I also organized my stash of patterns that I have collected and printed out. I punched them with a 3-hole punch and put them in makeshift notebook made out of loose rings. I don’t have a notebook yet.

Then I started to think about how many projects I have little notes on but it’s not all collected in one place. I try to write down all of the finished project notes in a notebook but it’s not complete. I’m sure there are more organized people than I regarding their finished objects.

Actually, this came up when I had to reproduce a water bottle coozie for L’s drawing prize. I had to dig out the notes I made for the first couple of coozies I made a few weeks ago.

All of the intention to be organized is there just no follow through. Just like logging my yarn stash.

I need to seriously start thinking about what I’m going to make for Christmas gifts. More boneyard shawls I think. At least one for my mother. Maybe one for L’s mom. Idk.

Another Opie hat for my brother.
